NEW #Tog Tuesday!
Posted by Amber McCoy in educational on June 29th, 2010

Westcott has decided to implement a new, little thing we call ‘#Tog Tuesday’. What is a ‘#Tog’? Well, in Social Media a ‘#Tog’ is defined as an abbreviated term for ‘photographer’ or ‘photog’. Because of the Social Media Network Twitter allowing for only 140 characters in each message, we must shorten everything because every character counts!
Now, what is a ‘#Tog Tuesday’? This is all about highlighting photography. Whether it be images, tips, tours, videos, new upcoming photographers – anything! This is all about what is going on in the world of photography and how Westcott can provide the information to you!
What to expect?
Expect everything photography! On Tuesdays we will launch out a new #Tog Tuesday topic – this could be anything from a simple term with a setup, or a short bio on a new upcoming photographer with a link to their page. Something simple – something short.
We want your feedback!
Please feel free to leave us feedback, comments, or suggestions of something you would like us to focus on or if you have any recommendations on topics, please let us know!
Rick Hughes: Studio Lighting & Your Budget

Article written by Rick Hughes on FusionExtreme.com on June 16, 2010
I have been a professional photographer for 22 years and one thing that I learned many years ago is to not be cheap when it comes to lenses. Go ahead and pay more, it’s worth it. Camera bodies are usually a little more flexible. A good quality DSLR can be found in the mid-range area. Lighting is something entirely different.
I have had the opportunity to work with top of the line lighting and also with lighting that is much (MUCH) less costly. What I have found is that price has little effect on your final image.
Pretend for a moment that you mortgage the house and shell out for some really expensive German gear. It recycles a little faster and the consistency is a (very) little better from one flash to another. You can drive a truck over the equipment and it will still work.

More than 30 participants and 20 models where on the location and shooting on 6 sets the whole day. Your equipment was very useful, especially the Reflectors, Scrim Jim and backgrounds where in use nonstop.

A Testimonial
My name is Tim Fillpot and I own and operate Fillpot Photography in Santa Maria, California. I have specialized in many types of photography, including wedding, families, babies, professional head shots, and commercial photography, for over 9 years. What began in 2001 in California’s Central Valley has grown into a wonderful business that has given me and my wife, Lillian, many fantastic opportunities to photograph and connect with so many wonderful people.
I have also been involved in selling merchandise on eBay since 2004. For the most part I’ve used window light to photograph my products; however, recently I decided I wanted something better, something more professional. I knew that to be a successful eBay seller, and to get top dollar for my merchandise, I needed to provide potential buyers with attractive, well-lit photographs.

Rick Sammon
B&H, Canon and Westcott teamed up for an amazing event featuring Rick Sammon, prolific author and world renown photographer.
There was a crowd of over 80 people packed into B&H’s Event Space, for a two hour lecture. Starting the day was Rick Berk, Canon Camera Product Educator, who went over the intricacies of Canon portable electronic flashes and all the various technical knowledge that is critical for successful flash and, especially, wireless flash photography.

Westcott's David Piazza
Following the insightful Canon presentation, Westcott’s Dave Piazza took the stage and went over the theory behind and the practical use of various light modifiers, including collapsible reflectors, umbrellas, and softboxes including Westcott’s unique umbrella frame based Apollo soft boxes that are perfect for wireless portable flash operation.
